Authorities Prepare Restoration Plan for La Guaira Coastline

Venezuela's Ministry for Ecosocialism is spearheading a comprehensive environmental remediation plan to clean up and reorganize the coastal strip of La Guaira, the state most severely affected by a double earthquake on June 24. The initiative aims to restore the damaged ecosystem and redefine land use along the coast.

The proposed strategy, detailed on Sunday, July 19, incorporates phytoremediation techniques, which involve planting specific vegetation species to aid in the recovery of the coastal environment. This approach seeks to adapt commercial and community activities to the area's preservation needs, prioritizing ecological balance.

Minister of Ecosocialism Nelson Rodríguez reported that the earthquakes generated an estimated 2,106,000 tons of debris. This figure, compiled in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), includes 1,529,000 tons of construction materials and 577,000 tons of personal belongings. To manage this massive amount of waste, authorities have set up 11 temporary disposal centers in La Guaira where debris is sorted into aggregate materials, recyclables, and hazardous waste.

This updated debris estimate surpasses the initial projection of approximately 1.2 million tons for Vargas alone, as calculated by the UNDP on June 29. The interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez previously reported damage to 856 buildings, with 190 completely collapsing due to the seismic events.
