Autopsy reveals civilian killed in Canindeyú police post died from single shot

Autopsy results reveal that Josemar Escobar, a civilian killed alongside two police officers in an attack on a police post in Ybyrarobaná, Canindeyú, Paraguay, died from a single, fatal gunshot wound. The attack, which occurred on a Tuesday night, is attributed by the government to the armed group known as the Paraguayan People's Army (EPP).

According to Dr. Pablo Lemir, head of Forensic Medicine for the Public Ministry, Escobar's death was caused by a single bullet that entered his lower back and exited near his face, causing fatal damage to his lungs and major blood vessels. Lemir suggested that Escobar may have been trying to shield himself when he was hit. The projectile, likely from a rifle, caused his death within minutes.

In contrast to the two police sub-officers, Atilio Martínez Barrios and Herminio Ojeda González, who were reportedly executed after being incapacitated and their bodies burned, Escobar's body showed no signs of execution-style killing or subsequent burning. However, Escobar's body did sustain "shrapnel entries" in the back, possibly from fragments of multiple shotgun projectiles, indicating he was also exposed to secondary fire.

Escobar, 37, worked as a secretary at the police post. The attack involved between 20 and 30 individuals armed with long weapons and Molotov cocktails. The Ministry of Public Health released the autopsy results for the two police officers earlier, stating they were executed. Escobar's body was to be handed over to his family.
