AW189 helicopter boosts Malaysia's Maritime capabilities

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritim Malaysia) is set to significantly boost its operational capacity with the induction of the AW189 medium-lift helicopter. The arrival of the first of four new aerial assets marks a crucial step in strengthening the nation's maritime security and sovereignty, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail highlighted that the acquisition of these four helicopters, approved under the Fourth Rolling Plan of the 11th Malaysia Plan, represents a substantial government commitment. The five-year contract, spanning from January 19, 2024, to January 18, 2029, is valued at RM529 million.

These enhanced capabilities are expected to benefit a wide range of stakeholders, including fishermen, maritime communities, the shipping industry, tourism sector, and all users of the country's waters. The AW189 will improve safety levels and the agency's ability to respond to emergencies at sea.

The AW189 helicopter boasts impressive specifications, including an operational range of up to 1,166 kilometers, a maximum speed of 313 kilometers per hour, and an endurance of up to five hours. It is capable of operating day and night in various weather conditions. Crewed by five individuals, the helicopter can carry up to 14 passengers, enabling Maritim Malaysia to conduct faster and more flexible responses, particularly in distant offshore areas.

Saifuddin emphasized that the integration of the AW189 is part of an ongoing effort to modernize and strengthen Maritim Malaysia's air assets, ensuring they remain relevant to current operational demands. The government remains committed to bolstering enforcement agencies through asset modernization, technological adoption, human capital development, and strategic collaborations.
