Azizulhasni Finally Gets Green Light to Chase LA28 Olympic Qualification

Datuk Azizulhasni Awang’s Olympic future has become clearer: Malaysia has backed the 38-year-old track cyclist’s pursuit of qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

The National Sports Council confirmed Azizulhasni among the Malaysian riders responsible for collecting qualification points in the keirin and individual sprint. Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari also instructed the council to ensure continuity in the national track cycling team’s qualification process.

This matter is important because the LA28 qualification process requires careful planning from the outset, including a clear understanding of the competition route and the form of support needed throughout the qualification period.

The campaign will begin at the 2026 Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai in October. Amarjit Singh Gill, president of the National Cycling Federation of Malaysia, said the confirmation would allow Azizulhasni to focus fully on a qualification route that requires early planning and a clear understanding of the competitions and support needed.

We are very pleased that the government and the National Sports Council have given a positive response. This is an important decision not only for Azizulhasni, but also for Malaysian cycling and the country’s aspirations at LA28.

The federation had already discussed qualification requirements and ranking events with the National Sports Council on July 7. It then wrote to the minister and council on Aug. 10 to request that Azizulhasni continue representing Malaysia and receive full support during the LA28 campaign.

Amarjit said the decision considered Azizulhasni’s current performance, achievements and extensive experience. He also described the cyclist as a potential source of inspiration for other Malaysian riders, saying he remains capable of competing successfully at the highest level.

Azizulhasni has already given so much to Malaysian sport, and Malaysia needs him to take on this important challenge and responsibility for the country. He continues to prove that he can still compete successfully at the highest level.
