Back to school in Mexico City to generate over 6 billion pesos in economic activity

The return to classes in Mexico City is projected to stimulate a significant economic boom, with the Mexican Employers' Confederation (Coparmex CDMX) estimating an economic spillover of 6.143 billion pesos. This influx of spending is attributed to the purchase of school supplies, electronics, and uniforms, directly benefiting the capital's micro and small businesses.

Coparmex CDMX detailed that this back-to-school season will support 40,189 establishments. Microenterprises represent the largest share, accounting for 81.5% of the beneficiaries, followed by small businesses at 13.7%, medium-sized businesses at 2.9%, and large establishments at 1.9%. This distribution highlights the crucial role small and medium-sized enterprises play in the local economy during this period.

Adal Ortiz Ávalos, president of Coparmex in Mexico City, emphasized the positive impact on employment, stating that the season is expected to benefit over 220,000 individuals working in these retail sectors. He also noted that the average expenditure per student for families in the capital will range between 3,500 and 4,000 pesos, covering essential items for the new school year. This represents a substantial financial commitment for many households.

Coparmex CDMX encouraged the public to utilize the city's economic traffic light system to guide their spending decisions during this important back-to-school season. The initiative aims to provide transparency and support informed consumer choices, further bolstering the economic activity generated by the return to educational institutions.
