BAE Systems Unveils Modular Warheads to Cut Costs for Drone Warfare

British defense giant BAE Systems has introduced the "BlackThorn" modular warhead family, a new system engineered for cost-effective, high-volume production of unmanned weapons and interception systems. This innovative design allows for mission-specific payloads, offering blast-fragmentation, multi-purpose, and anti-armor capabilities that can be adapted to a wide range of platforms.

The BlackThorn family is currently available in 40mm, 70mm, and 120mm calibers, all utilizing common core technology. This standardization means that specialized warheads do not need to be redeveloped for every new weapon system. BAE Systems highlights that this approach significantly cuts down research, inventory, and logistical expenses, while also speeding up the integration process for new armaments.

BlackThorn combines the company's expertise in warhead design, explosives, fuzing, and mass ammunition production to rapidly provide affordable multi-purpose warheads for next-generation expendable platforms and counter-drone systems.

One of the first applications for BlackThorn is its integration into the Mark I short-range air defense missile, developed by Estonia's Frankenburg Technologies. Designed to intercept unmanned aerial systems, including propeller-driven drones and faster jet-powered drones like Russia's "Shahed" series, the Mark I aims for a production rate of approximately 100 missiles per day. Frankenburg Technologies has secured a contract with the UK Ministry of Defence to establish domestic production under the "Low-Cost Air Defence Launcher" program. This collaboration exemplifies a growing trend in the European defense industry, where established contractors partner with agile startups to expedite the transition from concept to mass deployment.
