Bafra Plain Harvest Sweet as Honey, But Farmers Struggle with Sales

The fertile Bafra Plain, a significant agricultural hub in the Black Sea region, is currently bustling with harvest activities. Farmers are bringing in a bountiful crop of Süheyla melons, known for their exceptional sweetness, and the highly acclaimed Bafra watermelons.

However, the sweet success of the harvest is being tempered by market challenges. Farmers are finding it difficult to sell their produce at the farm gate for the set price of 3 lira per kilogram. This price point, intended to reflect the quality and effort involved, is proving to be a barrier.

The primary reason cited for the slow sales is the size of the watermelons. Consumers are reportedly reluctant to purchase them, with the common refrain being that the fruits are "too big." This consumer preference for smaller sizes is creating a disconnect between the farmers' successful yield and their ability to profit from it, despite the high quality of the produce.
