Bali Ministry Aids Gelgel Songket Weaving in Geographical Indication Filing

The Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights is actively supporting the refinement of documentation for the Geographical Indication (IG) application of Gelgel Songket Weaving in Klungkung Regency.

This strategic effort seeks to offer legal protection and bolster the competitiveness of this traditional local textile product. The process involves a collaborative effort among various stakeholders, including the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), the Regional Research and Innovation Agency (Brida) of Klungkung Regency, Intellectual Property Centers, the Community for the Protection of Geographical Indications (MPIG) for Gelgel Songket Weaving, and local village governments.

Putu Edi Wahyudi, an Intellectual Property Analyst at the Bali Regional Office, emphasized the critical importance of registering the IG. "Protection through IG is expected to maintain the reputation, distinctive characteristics, and quality standards of Gelgel Songket Weaving, while also promoting the economic sustainability of the artisan community," he stated, noting the rise in similar products from outside the region.

The process included a field review visiting Gelgel Songket Weaving artisans to observe production methods and product characteristics firsthand. Subsequently, experts from the Geographical Indication Team and the DJKI engaged in discussions to finalize the descriptive document. Key agreements were reached regarding the product's specifications, including kamen, saput, and selendang, with a minimum requirement of 10 percent gold thread content and the use of the traditional "nyongket" technique with "cagcag" looms.

Further refinements focused on the geographical area map, the traceability code, and the craft specifications, all crucial for quality control and maintaining the consistent quality and reputation of Gelgel Songket Weaving. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure the product's distinctiveness and support the livelihoods of the local craftspeople.
