Balikpapan strengthens registration of 9,740 nonpermanent residents

Balikpapan’s Population and Civil Registration Agency is strengthening its records of 9,740 nonpermanent residents as the East Kalimantan city responds to high population mobility.

Agency head Tirta Dewi said the residents were staying temporarily in Balikpapan for work, education or family matters. “Registering nonpermanent residents is important so public services reach the right people,” she said in Balikpapan.

Population movement runs in both directions, Tirta said. People arrive from other areas, while many Balikpapan residents leave the city for work or education. Officials therefore consider regular data updates essential to prevent a gap between administrative records and conditions on the ground.

Population data is not merely numbers. It becomes the basis for government policy, from education and health to development planning.

The agency recorded Balikpapan’s population at 770,047 in the first half of 2026, an increase of 3,995 from the end of 2025. The rise reflected a combination of natural growth, including births, and relatively balanced movement into and out of the city.

Tirta said population data would serve as a basis for government decisions covering education, health and development planning. The agency is increasing monitoring at the neighborhood level and urged both newcomers and people preparing to move to update their administrative documents. “Administrative compliance is decisive for data accuracy,” she said.
