Ballistic Missile Attack on Kyiv Kills Nine, Injures 28

At least nine people were killed and 28 injured in a Russian ballistic missile attack that struck Kyiv overnight Friday into Saturday. The bombardment ignited fires and caused widespread destruction across several districts of the Ukrainian capital, as rescue teams continue to search through the debris.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported the provisional death toll, confirming that children were among the victims. Several individuals remain trapped in damaged buildings. Emergency services indicated that a five-story residential building in the Solomianskîi district was partially destroyed and engulfed in flames. In the Darnîțkîi district, a significant fire broke out in an administrative building, with further damage reported in at least five other city sectors.

A journalist from Agence France-Presse (AFP) in Kyiv recounted hearing multiple powerful explosions during the night, which triggered car alarms on the streets. "As soon as the alarm went off, I only managed to get to the hallway, to the entrance, and it started to shake. Even the linoleum lifted," said Kateryna Kravchenko, 75, to AFP. Another resident, Oksana, described hearing "truly terrible explosions" followed by falling glass as people fled their homes amid continuing blasts.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed the attack targeted "military-industrial complex enterprises and logistical centers" in Ukraine. However, Kyiv authorities assert that the missiles hit residential areas. This attack follows another bombardment on Ukraine just a day prior, which killed eight people near Kryvyi Rih, including six members of the same family. Two more individuals died in attacks on Kyiv and the Poltava region.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiga reiterated the urgent need for additional military support, stating on platform X, "Ukraine urgently needs additional air and missile defense systems, as well as interceptor aircraft. The speed of decisions and deliveries is crucial." Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that his administration is still reviewing Kyiv's request for licensing to produce Patriot interceptors, emphasizing caution regarding the technology's proliferation.
