Baltic Road Cycling Championship: Akvilė Gedraitytė Crowned Champion, Aivaras Mikutis Defends Lithuanian Title

Akvilė Gedraitytė has been crowned the champion of the Baltic road cycling championship, with Aivaras Mikutis successfully defending his Lithuanian title. The event, held over four days in Panevėžys, Lithuania, attracted more than 600 athletes from the Baltic region.

On Sunday, cyclists contended with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) in the group races. In the women's 120.8 km race, Olympic athlete Daiva Tušlaitė-Ragažinskienė, Olivija Baleišytė, and Estonia's Ann-Christine Allik led for over 40 km. However, the leading trio was caught with 11 km remaining, leading to a mass sprint where Gedraitytė emerged victorious, becoming both the Baltic and Lithuanian champion.

Gedraitytė expressed gratitude to her teammate, stating, "I can only thank Olivija, who was the main reason I won today – she brought me to the finish line." She noted the race was relatively calm, with the main challenge being a breakaway that was eventually caught. The second and third places in the Baltic championship went to Estonia's Elisabeth Ebras and Laura Lizette Sander, respectively. Lithuania's D. Tušlaitė-Ragažinskienė took silver, and Skaistė Mikašauskaitė secured bronze in the Lithuanian championship.

In the men's 161 km race, Lithuanian athletes did not secure podium finishes, with Estonian riders dominating. Rometas Pajuras won the championship, followed by Oskar Kuut and Norman Vahtra, all from Estonia. Aivaras Mikutis, defending his Lithuanian title, finished fifth overall. "I would say the race was intense from the start, with many attacks on the first lap," Mikutis commented. He described breaking away from the main group and successfully defending his national title as a significant achievement.
