Bamboo Basket Artisans See Orders Surge Ahead of Eid al-Adha

As Eid al-Adha approaches, Indonesian artisans crafting traditional bamboo baskets, known as 'besek,' are seeing an unprecedented surge in demand. Weavers in Malang, East Java, and Klaten, Central Java, report a fivefold increase in daily orders compared to normal periods.

This boom is attributed to the growing preference for eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags for distributing meat from sacrificial animals during the Islamic holiday. The 'besek' offers a sustainable solution, replacing single-use plastics that contribute to environmental pollution.

Artisans are working overtime to meet the demand. In Malang, daily production has jumped from approximately 200 baskets to as many as 1,000. Similarly, in Klaten, orders have climbed from 200 pairs to 700 pairs per day. The baskets are being sold for prices ranging from Rp3,000 to Rp10,000 each, depending on their size and quality.

The increased production highlights a cultural shift towards sustainability, with traditional crafts playing a vital role in promoting environmentally conscious practices during significant cultural events.
