Bamboo Mythical Creature 'Tan Ji' Welcomes Visitors in Tainan, Symbolizing Prosperity

A striking bamboo-woven mythical creature, known as 'Tan Ji,' now greets visitors at the Tso-chen Fossil Park in Tainan, Taiwan. Standing an impressive 6.2 meters long, the artwork took 14 days to complete and showcases the local bamboo craftsmanship.

Artist Lin Chao-ching explained that 'Tan Ji' is inspired by a bull, a symbol of Taiwan's agricultural roots. The name itself is a play on words, combining 'Tan' from 'Exploring Tso-chen' with the Taiwanese pronunciation of 'making money,' conveying a message of gentle protection and blessings. In traditional culture, mythical beasts represent respect for the land and hopes for the future.

Taiwan is founded on agriculture. Tan Ji is inspired by a bull, symbolizing gentle protection and blessings. The name comes from 'Exploring Tso-chen' and also echoes the Taiwanese pronunciation of 'making money.'

This collaborative project brought together artists, local organizations, and residents, aiming to celebrate and preserve the region's unique bamboo industry. A towering 5-meter bamboo-woven bamboo shoot also stands nearby, further emphasizing the traditional craft.

The initiative seeks to not only attract tourists with its unique cultural display but also to revitalize the Tso-chen district by encouraging young people to return and engage with their heritage. An exhibition and sale of bamboo crafts are also featured on the second floor of the 'Tso-chen Exploration Hall,' extending the protective spirit of 'Tan Ji' and symbolizing the continuation of Tso-chen's legacy.
