Bangladesh revives Dhaka waterways, eyes private water bus operators

Bangladesh's government is set to revitalize the waterways surrounding Dhaka, with plans to potentially allow private companies to operate water buses following a review of their proposals.

The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat. The Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary, Shahadat Shadhin, confirmed the development. According to a press release, Rahman issued directives to relevant authorities to actively combat pollution in Dhaka's rivers. He also emphasized the need to improve the city's drainage system and ensure the navigability and natural flow of water are maintained.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister instructed officials to plant various tree species along the riverfront walkways. This initiative aims to protect the environment and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the riverbanks. The meeting was attended by Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan, and Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Abdus Salam, along with senior officials from relevant ministries and agencies.
