Bangladesh: Seven-Year-Old Girl Found Dead, Murder Case Filed

Police in Rangpur's Taraganj upazila recovered the body of a seven-year-old schoolgirl today, a day after she was reported missing. A murder case has been filed in connection with the incident, and an autopsy is being conducted to ascertain the exact cause of her death.

The deceased, identified as Sanjida Akter, was a second-grade student at a local government primary school and the daughter of Saidul Islam. She had been missing since yesterday afternoon. Her family, along with local residents, initiated an overnight search, checking with relatives and neighbors and making announcements via loudspeakers.

Farmers discovered her body around 1:30 p.m. today in a jute field approximately 200 meters from her home, near the Teesta Irrigation Canal. Taraganj police retrieved the body and transported it to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. A local farmer recalled seeing the child playing in the area yesterday morning.

Sanjida's father, Saidul Islam, demanded justice, stating that the family had no known disputes with anyone. "My daughter was very calm and well-behaved. She was brutally murdered and left in a jute field. I want the maximum punishment for the killers," he said. Delwar Hossain, a member of the Alampur Union Parishad, described the incident as shocking to the entire community, noting that the victim was a classmate of his daughter.

Taraganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin confirmed that the preliminary inquest report indicated Sanjida's eyes had been gouged. "The incident is being investigated with utmost importance. Police are working to uncover the motive and identify and arrest those responsible," he stated, adding that the murder case was filed on Saturday afternoon.
