Domestic worker, 11, dies after falling from Dhaka building; family alleges murder

An 11-year-old domestic worker, Rikta Akter, died early today after reportedly falling from the 10th floor of a 12-story building in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area. The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Road 9/A. Rikta was taken to Ibn Sina Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Building staff reported hearing a loud sound and finding the girl bleeding on the ground behind the building. She was still alive and breathing heavily when discovered. After initial treatment at a nearby center, she was transferred to Ibn Sina Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The family of the victim, originally from Sunamganj and living in Tongi, sent Rikta to work through an agent about a month ago for Tk 10,000. Her father, Md Shahin Mia, alleged that he noticed swelling on his daughter's face during a video call a week prior and had asked the agent to bring her home.

"My daughter did not fall to her death; she was killed. I demand justice for my daughter's murder and severe punishment for those who did this," Md Shahin Mia stated. He alleges his daughter was murdered and is demanding a proper investigation and justice. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
