Banyana stunned by Tanzania in WAFCON opener

South Africa's Banyana Banyana experienced a stunning 2-1 loss to Tanzania in their opening match of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2026 campaign. The defeat in Casablanca on Monday leaves the favored South African side in a precarious position in Group B.

Despite largely controlling the game and creating numerous opportunities, Banyana failed to convert their chances. Tanzania took the lead in the 37th minute through Diana Msewa, whose shot deflected in off South African defender Bongeka Gamede. Although Bambanani Mbane equalized for South Africa just before halftime, Hasnath Ubamba secured the winning goal for Tanzania with a fine individual effort in the 87th minute.

Key moments saw Ester Maseke of Tanzania challenging Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa. South Africa had several near misses, including a shot scuffed by Sinoxolo Cesane and a header from Mbane that was saved. Hildah Magaia blazed over the bar, and Karabo Dhlamini's cross hit the crossbar. Thembi Kgatlana was denied by a superb save from Tanzanian goalkeeper Najiat Abass, but Mbane scored from the resulting corner.

The loss places significant pressure on South Africa, with matches against Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso still to come. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, with the four semifinalists earning direct berths and two quarterfinal losers advancing to intercontinental playoffs. Tanzania's victory gives them crucial early points in the race to the quarterfinals.
