Barcelona loans defender Ronald Araujo to Liverpool for 2026/27 season

FC Barcelona confirmed on August 10, 2026, that defender Ronald Araujo will be loaned to Liverpool FC for the 2026/27 season. The Uruguayan signed his contract on Monday, marking a new chapter after eight seasons with the Spanish club. Earlier this year, Araujo was named captain of the reigning LaLiga champions.

"I'm dying to start, I'm very happy," Araujo stated to Liverpool's official channel. The defender had been sidelined due to mental health issues following Barcelona's 3-0 loss to Chelsea in the Champions League. He rejoined the team on January 12 of this year, contributing to their LaLiga title win last season.

The 27-year-old Araujo will wear the number 33 jersey and play under Spanish coach Andoni Irarola, who is also beginning his first season with Liverpool. "It was the ideal move for me at this stage of my career. I believe it was a decision I had to make," Araujo said about his loan to the Reds.

Araujo joined Barcelona in 2018, debuting with the first team in 2019 and being promoted permanently two years later. During his tenure, he won three LaLiga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and three Supercopa de España titles. Barcelona's farewell statement noted his record of 213 matches and 14 goals, highlighting his defensive prowess that will now be showcased at Liverpool.

Both Barcelona and Liverpool are set to officially commence their seasons on August 23. Barcelona will begin their LaLiga campaign with an away match against Elche, while Liverpool will also play away against Newcastle. Both clubs will participate in the Champions League league stage.
