Barcelona Takes LaLiga Lead with 2-0 Victory Over Athletic Club

FC Barcelona seized the top spot in LaLiga on Thursday, securing a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Athletic Club in a postponed fixture from the first matchday.

The reigning league champions claimed their second consecutive win thanks to decisive goals from Raphinha in the 37th minute and Fermín López in the 82nd minute. The match also marked the debut of World Cup winner Rodrigo Hernández, known as Rodri, for Barcelona.

Barcelona controlled the game, though they initially struggled to break down Athletic Club's pressing defense. Goalkeeper Unai Simón was instrumental for the visitors, making several crucial saves, including denying Lamine Yamal twice in the first half and stopping a powerful shot from Anthony Gordon in the second.

Raphinha opened the scoring after receiving a through ball and finishing past Simón. The Brazilian winger, who has become a key attacking reference for Barcelona in the absence of a central striker, now has three goals in two games, matching Kylian Mbappé's tally. Coach Hansi Flick praised Raphinha's commitment, stating, "No matter what position Raphinha plays, as captain he has total commitment to this team."

Following the first goal, Barcelona increased their intensity. After halftime, Pedri orchestrated the midfield, and Barcelona dominated possession. Despite hitting the crossbar twice, through Lamine Yamal and Fermín López, Barcelona eventually sealed the win with López's late goal. Athletic Club's best chances came from Nico Williams and Oihan Sancet, whose shot hit the post.
