Basarab Overpass works begin; Bucharest City Hall outlines traffic avoidance plan

Bucharest City Hall has announced that work will commence on the Basarab Overpass, a structure described as having been neglected for 15 years. Traffic restrictions will be implemented starting June 20, with alternative routes provided to mitigate congestion. The city administration stated that the overpass is in a state of disrepair, with rust, damaged concrete elements, and compromised safety features.

From June 20 to July 31, traffic will be restricted to a single lane in both directions on one side of the overpass. In August, traffic will be diverted to the other side. Starting September, coinciding with the increase in traffic due to the school year, specific road closures will be introduced. The city aims to complete all repair works by the end of the year.

In addition to road traffic adjustments, tram lines 4 and 11 will be suspended and replaced by line 54. Other tram lines will see modifications to their routes, and a new shuttle line, 610, will be introduced to connect key areas. Tram traffic is expected to return to normal by September 1.

The city hall emphasized that the overpass, inaugurated in 2011, was never officially received and has since deteriorated significantly. Repairs will include replacing damaged metal parapets, expansion joints, and concrete elements, as well as fixing the rainwater system and resurfacing the road. Initial constructors Astaldi and FCC, along with local companies, will carry out the work.
