Baseball: Former Monkeys pitcher Robert Gohmert leads alma mater to Koshien for first time in 100 years

Hachioji Jitsugyo High School has achieved a historic milestone, reaching the Koshien tournament for the first time in its 100-year existence. The team secured its spot by defeating Soka High School 1-0 in the West Tokyo finals.

Leading the team is head coach Robert Gohmert, a former pitcher of mixed Japanese and American heritage. Gohmert, once dubbed the "phantom first draft pick," pursued a career in professional baseball after college. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, played in minor league baseball, the Australian Baseball League, and independent leagues before joining Taiwan's Lamigo Monkeys in 2013. During his tenure in Taiwan, he made 14 relief appearances with a 3.71 ERA.

After retiring from playing, Gohmert took the helm at his high school alma mater, Hachioji Jitsugyo, in 2019. The decisive run in the final game came in the seventh inning when Kosuke Araki hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring the game's only run. Pitcher Shintaro Okuyama threw 130 pitches, and ace Shota Tsukahara closed out the game, preserving the shutout.

An emotional Gohmert praised his players, stating, "Last time I gave the players a 120 percent, so this time I want to give them 150 percent!" He added, "As Tokyo's representative, we will do our best and continue to fight hard so as not to shame Tokyo."
