Battle Against Flames in Sitia: Strong Firefighting Forces Engage in Achladia Area

Firefighters are battling a blaze that erupted Friday night in the Achladia area of Sitia, located in Crete's Lasithi region. Strong winds are significantly complicating the efforts of the Hellenic Fire Service, which has mobilized substantial resources to the scene. The fire ignited in an area with low vegetation, near a wind farm, intensifying the challenge for emergency crews.

Currently, 40 firefighters, two ground teams from the 3rd Special Unit for Forest Operations (EMODE), volunteers, and 11 fire engines are engaged in the operation. Water tenders from the Municipality of Sitia are also assisting the ground forces. Despite the difficult conditions, the fire has not spread significantly beyond its initial location, according to the latest reports from the Fire Service.

However, operations continue with extreme caution. The powerful winds pose a constant risk of reignition and rapid changes in the fire's front. The region is currently under a high fire risk alert (Category 3), heightening the operational readiness of authorities. The Investigating Unit for Arson Crimes in Lasithi has been activated to determine the cause of the fire, examining all possibilities regarding its origin.
