Porto Germeno Wildfire Destroys Hundreds of Homes; Aid Applications Begin Monday

Residents of Porto Germeno are confronting scenes of total devastation following a recent wildfire that has left hundreds of homes destroyed and inflicted incalculable material damage. Many houses have suffered irreparable destruction and have been declared unsafe for habitation, as owners return to find the results of their life's work turned to ash.

Damage assessments conducted by relevant teams have been completed, with the process for submitting applications for initial financial assistance to fire victims set to commence on Monday, August 10th. According to inspection data, a total of 192 properties were inspected in Porto Germeno. Of these, 84 buildings were classified as "red," deemed dangerous and requiring demolition, while another 65 were marked as "yellow," meaning they are temporarily unsuitable for use.

In total, over 100 residences have been completely destroyed or severely damaged. Teams are meticulously inspecting each affected building to document the extent of the destruction. The Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, stated that the municipality will issue a relevant announcement on Monday for citizens to submit their applications.

Affected individuals will need to provide documentation such as their E9 tax form, E1 tax declaration, and a certificate of family status to receive initial financial aid, including a basic living expenses allowance and a household goods allowance. In early September, the application process for repairing or rebuilding the affected homes is expected to open. State aid for completely destroyed homes can reach up to 1,000 euros per square meter for residences up to 150 square meters, without income criteria. Additional support includes allowances for temporary housing and replacement of household goods.
