Bauchi declares Monday work-free for LG poll

Bauchi State in Nigeria has declared August 17, 2026, a public holiday for all civil servants and public sector employees. This move is to ensure widespread participation in the upcoming Local Government Council elections. The state government's decision aims to enable citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote without the conflict of official duties.

The declaration, announced by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, applies to workers at local, state, and federal levels, including those in the banking sector. The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission has scheduled the elections for Monday, August 17.

The declaration is intended to provide eligible citizens the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote and contribute to the democratic process at the grassroots level without disruption arising from official duties.

While encouraging all eligible voters to participate peacefully, the government stressed that workers in essential services are exempt from the holiday. The administration also called for cooperation with security agencies and electoral officials to ensure a smooth and orderly electoral process. The government expressed its wish for a peaceful and successful election.
