Bauska Primary School Reorganization Postponed Amidst Management Resignations

The Bauska City Primary School in Latvia will not be reorganized for the time being, a decision made by the Bauska regional council during an extraordinary session on August 6. The council opted to postpone decisions regarding the school's restructuring after its entire management team, including the director and two deputy directors, resigned.

The resignations are effective August 20, 21, and 24. Initially, the council's agenda included three proposals: revoking a previous decision, merging the primary school with Bauska Secondary School No. 2, and appointing an interim director. However, following discussions with the school's parent council and teachers, council chairman Aivars Mačeks proposed deferring all three issues to allow for a new director to be appointed through a competition.

The council unanimously supported this proposal. The municipality plans to organize the competition as quickly as possible, with the application deadline potentially set for August 26. The council could revisit the school's future by late August or early September. If no suitable candidates emerge, the council will reconsider reorganization. An interim director may be appointed by the council chairman's decree until the competition concludes.

Previously, the council had tasked the school's director with opening and implementing special education programs for students with intellectual disabilities by September 1, 2026, to meet quantitative targets. This task will now fall to a new director if one is appointed. The council's initial consideration of reorganization was influenced by declining student enrollment trends and uncertainty about attracting sufficient students for the new special education programs.

In a separate decision during the extraordinary session, the council unanimously voted to rename Bauska Secondary School No. 2 to "Bauskas Vidusskola" effective September 1. This name change was proposed by the school's council and director, Vera G.
