Bavaria's police fly with new helicopter fleet

The Bavarian police force has officially completed the modernization of its helicopter fleet, marking a significant upgrade in its operational capabilities. The final of eight new Airbus H145 helicopters was handed over in Donauwörth, Germany, by Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder and Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann.

This comprehensive fleet renewal represents an investment of approximately 145 million euros by the Free State of Bavaria. The new H145 models are replacing the older Airbus EC135 aircraft, bringing state-of-the-art technology to the police force. Interior Minister Herrmann described the H145 as "the most modern and powerful police helicopter worldwide."

The upgraded helicopters boast advanced features, including high-resolution cameras and powerful communication systems. A key improvement is the increased capacity for special police forces, allowing eight officers to be transported to a mission site simultaneously, doubling the previous capacity of four. Minister-President Söder highlighted that the new models can fly further, faster, and for longer durations, emphasizing that "Our police, as a top organization, are getting new top equipment."

Beyond law enforcement and special operations, the H145 helicopters also demonstrate enhanced capabilities in firefighting. They can now drop up to 800 liters of water, an increase of 300 liters compared to the previous models. This improved water-dropping capacity was recently showcased during a wildfire incident in the Chiemgau Alps. The police helicopter squadron is based at Munich Airport, with an additional facility in Roth near Nuremberg, supporting operations across the region, including mountain rescues and searches for missing persons.
