Bayelsa deputy gov urges women to lead vanguard for social change

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Peter Akpe has called on women across Nigeria to spearhead patriotic efforts toward social change and a more improved society. He made this appeal during a solidarity visit from a women's support group from the Bayelsa West Senatorial District.

Akpe highlighted the indispensable role women play in nation-building. He stressed that their active engagement in communicating behavioral changes at all societal levels, family, community, state, and national, is vital for tackling issues like insecurity and crime. The deputy governor also underscored the need for value reorientation and adherence to standards in both private and public life to foster sustainable progress.

"As women and mothers, we appreciate the role you play in society. You birth today for tomorrow," Akpe stated, encouraging them to be agents of social engineering. He urged them to address issues like entitlement mentality and to promote contentment, a value he believes is essential for societies making progress.

While receiving the delegation, accompanied by his wife Favour Akpe, the deputy governor cautioned against prioritizing political gains within their group's objectives. Instead, he advised them to view the support group as a platform for fostering relationships and developing capacity. He also cautioned against irrational political decision-making, which can lead to irrelevance, and encouraged patience and loyalty to leaders.

"If you want to have a long-lasting team, then don’t build it totally on political grounds and high expectations. That will not take us far. But build it on the foundation of relationships," he advised. Akpe encouraged mutual support within the group, noting that opportunities change over time and that expanding horizons beyond politics into relationships is crucial.
