Bayern Captain Manuel Neuer Opens Door to Retirement After 2026/2027 Season

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer is contemplating the end of his illustrious career, with retirement after the 2026/2027 season now a distinct possibility. The 40-year-old goalkeeper has acknowledged that the chances of him hanging up his gloves are significant, although he has not yet made a final decision.

Neuer had previously announced his retirement from international football following the 2026 World Cup. This decision has naturally led to increased speculation about his future at the club level. "The possibility is not one hundred percent at the moment. It's not set in stone, but the probability is high," Neuer was quoted as saying, according to the Bundesliga website on Friday, August 14, 2026.

Despite his age, Neuer recently signed a one-year contract extension with Bayern Munich, keeping him at the Allianz Arena until June 30, 2027. He remains the first-choice goalkeeper for the German giants. However, competition is emerging, with young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig having been given opportunities by coach Vincent Kompany.

Neuer still harbors significant ambitions with Bayern, including breaking the record for the most Bundesliga titles. He currently holds 13 league titles. He also aims to help Bayern win another Champions League trophy, having previously won the competition twice with the club in 2013 and 2020. These ambitions mean Neuer is not fully focused on retirement, believing the current squad has the quality, mentality, and tactical approach to compete at the highest level and potentially achieve a treble.
