Bayreuth Festival's 150th anniversary confronts past with 'Rienzi' and AI-infused 'Ring'

The Bayreuth Festival is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a special edition that confronts its complex history, including a new production of 'Rienzi,' an opera once favored by Adolf Hitler. The festival also marks the occasion with a rendition of 'The Ring of the Nibelung' that will feature artificial intelligence.

'Rienzi' is not typically part of the Bayreuth canon, which was established to showcase Richard Wagner's works, particularly 'The Ring of the Nibelung.' Other Wagner operas like 'Lohengrin' and 'Parsifal' are staples, but 'Rienzi,' which premiered in Dresden in 1842, is less common.

Katharina Wagner, the composer's great-granddaughter, is using the 150th anniversary to address this past through a special event titled 'Muted Voices.' This title is inspired by an exhibition dedicated to Jewish musicians connected to Bayreuth who were later persecuted by the Nazis. The new production of 'Rienzi' is part of this effort to confront the past, as the opera depicts the rise and fall of a dictator fueled by the masses.
