BBC Praises Taiwan's 'Round-Island Route 1'; Ministry Announces Longer, Safer Route 2 by Year-End

The BBC recently highlighted the scenic beauty of Taiwan's "Round-Island Bicycle Route No. 1" in a special feature, showcasing the island's diverse landscapes accessible by bike. This route, spanning nearly 1,000 kilometers, winds through coastal villages, mountainous regions in Hualien and Taitung, and bustling urban centers.

The Ministry of Transportation is fully promoting the "Round-Island Route No. 2", which is 1,019 kilometers long and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

In response to the growing popularity of cycling tourism, Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation is nearing completion of "Round-Island Bicycle Route No. 2." This new route, extending approximately 1,019 kilometers, is designed to offer a distinct experience from Route No. 1. It prioritizes safety and continuity, incorporating dedicated bicycle lanes, optimized existing paths, and scenic waterfronts.

Compared to Route No. 1, the main difference of Route No. 2 is the significant reduction in the proportion of shared outer lanes.

Minister of Transportation Chen Shih-kai noted that Route No. 2 significantly increases the proportion of dedicated bike lanes to about 37%, compared to 11.2% on Route No. 1. This enhancement aims to improve cyclist safety and provide a more comfortable riding environment. The route also offers a longer journey and closer proximity to local attractions and coastal scenery, including the recently opened Tamshui-Bali cross-sea bridge, which features a dedicated bicycle path.
