Belgium pledges entire F-16 fleet to Ukraine by 2030

Belgium is preparing to make an unprecedented commitment by transferring its entire fleet of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by the end of the decade. This significant pledge, though still political and spread over several years, underscores Belgium's dedication to bolstering Ukraine's military capabilities amid ongoing international pressure for increased support.

The transfer process will begin in 2024 with seven F-16 aircraft. Four of these are currently non-operational and will be provided "as is" to aid in the training of Ukrainian aeronautical technicians. The remaining three will be operational and will directly augment Ukraine's active air force.

A more substantial delivery is planned for 2027 and 2028, when approximately twenty additional F-16s are expected to be transferred. This phase aims to significantly enhance Ukraine's combat air power. The Belgian government intends to compensate for any perceived shortfalls in earlier commitments by eventually transferring its entire remaining F-16 inventory.

The ultimate goal is to transfer all 53 of Belgium's F-16s to Ukraine by 2030. This ambitious plan is facilitated by Belgium's ongoing transition to the F-35 Lightning II, which is gradually replacing the aging F-16s in the Belgian Air Force. The modernized F-16s, developed during the Cold War, are seen as a strategic asset to be transferred rather than decommissioned.

This Belgian initiative aligns with similar commitments from other Western nations, including the Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway, which have also pledged F-16 transfers to Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously hailed such aircraft as a "paradigm shift for Ukrainian combat aviation." However, it is important to note that the transfer of the additional 23 aircraft, which would complete the total commitment, remains a political promise, with a formal government decision anticipated around 2028.
