Bella has once again claimed the top spot as America's favorite dog name in 2026, with Luna and Max closely following, according to a nationwide analysis of pet naming trends. This year's rankings are compiled from more than half a million dog registrations gathered between January 2022 and June 2026 by a third-party pet insurance industry partner.

The data reflects naming patterns across the United States, where approximately 56.3 million households own at least one dog. While traditional names continue to be popular nationwide, regional preferences reveal distinct favorites. Owners are increasingly choosing names inspired by various sources, including movies, mythology, food, and pop culture.

Bella and Luna have been vying for the top two positions since 2023, with Max reclaiming third place after ranking fourth in 2025. The enduring popularity of names like Bella, meaning "beautiful" in Italian and Spanish, and Luna, meaning "moon," may also be influenced by multilingual households. Rounding out the top five are Coco and Daisy, names that have consistently remained favorites among American dog owners.

Bella's dominance is evident across most states, ranking first in 25 states and tying for first in two others. Luna leads in several western and northeastern states, including California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, Utah, and Washington. However, a few states deviate from the national trend with unique top-ranked names, such as Hawaii preferring Koa, Montana opting for Barron, North Dakota choosing Jack, and Wyoming selecting Milo. Wyoming also features unusual favorites like Sassy and Latte, while Montana's top three includes Sky.

Mythology continues to be a significant source of inspiration, with Zeus, Loki, Apollo, Thor, and Athena being among the most popular mythological names. Similarly, royal titles like Duke, Princess, Lady, King, and Prince remain consistent fixtures in the national Top 100, showcasing the timeless appeal of regal monikers for canine companions. Food-themed names, particularly those inspired by sweet treats and snacks, also maintain their popularity.
