Benjamin Savšek carries Slovenia's hopes in canoe slalom World Championships final

Slovenian canoe slalom athlete Benjamin Savšek will be the only representative from his country competing in the finals of the World Championships in Oklahoma City.

Benjamin Savšek will defend the Slovenian honor in the canoe slalom race at the World Championships in Oklahoma City.

Savšek secured his spot in the final by achieving the eighth-best time in the semifinals, successfully navigating the course without penalty. This performance stands in contrast to his qualifying round, where he placed 29th. Despite a less than ideal season in the World Cup, Savšek demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure when it counts most. His clean run in the semifinals, where he started early and held a leading position for a time, showcased his experience and skill.

Unfortunately, Savšek's teammates Luka Božič and Eva Alina Hočevar did not make it to the finals. Both finished in 18th place in their respective semifinals. Božič completed his run without penalty but was too slow, finishing over four seconds behind the leader and more than a second shy of the 12th spot needed for qualification. Hočevar, who had openly aimed for medals based on her strong World Cup performances, expressed disappointment. She struggled with the course in Oklahoma City throughout the competition, failing to reach the finals in any of the three disciplines she entered.

Hočevar's challenges were evident in her semifinal run. While she attempted a cautious approach to avoid penalties, she made a critical error at gate 17, touching the gate and losing any chance of advancing. A clean run would have placed her in the final. The women's semifinal was dominated by Monica Doria of Andorra, while Australia's Jessica Fox, a previous multiple gold medalist, also missed out on the final.

Savšek's progression to the final offers Slovenia a chance at a sixth world championship medal in the sport. His consistent ability to deliver strong performances in crucial moments has once again positioned him as the team's leading contender.

She made a mistake at gate 17, touched the gate, and thus lost all chances of advancing among the best. Without a touch, she would have been a finalist.
