Benue deputy governor demands justice for victims of Otukpo killings

Benue Deputy Governor Dr Sam Ode has issued a strong condemnation of the "barbaric, inhuman, and unacceptable" attacks on the Akpachi community in Ugboju District and the Otukpo-Nobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area. Suspected armed herders are alleged to have brutally murdered innocent citizens in the early hours of July 12, an act that Ode described as a grave threat to the peace, security, and development of the state.

In a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Godwin Ikyereve, the deputy governor expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the affected communities, as well as the entire people of the Benue South Senatorial District. Governor Hyacinth Alia, who is currently out of the state on official assignment, has been fully briefed on the developments. He has directed all heads of security agencies in Benue to immediately move to Otukpo to monitor, contain, and decisively address the escalating situation.

Ode assured the residents that efforts are underway to apprehend and bring the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice. Appealing to the public to refrain from taking matters into their own hands, the deputy governor reiterated the government's and security agencies' dedication to restoring normalcy. He promised that those responsible for the attacks would face the full weight of the law. The deputy governor concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the souls of the departed and for comfort and healing for the bereaved families and affected communities.
