Bishkek grocery basket prices drop slightly as meat and pasta rise

The cost of essential groceries in Bishkek has seen a minor decrease, with the minimal product basket now costing 6,873 soms, down 26 soms from the previous week. This slight reduction comes despite price hikes in key items like meat and pasta.

Over the past week, shoppers in Bishkek's supermarkets saw prices fall for cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, onions, and apples. However, these decreases were offset by rising costs for meat, pasta, carrots, pears, bananas, and vegetable oil. The fluctuations highlight the dynamic nature of food prices in the Kyrgyz capital.

This ongoing monitoring, conducted weekly at the same supermarket with a consistent set of products, reveals a longer-term trend. Since the experiment's inception in late October 2018, the grocery basket's cost has surged by 3,603 soms. This year alone, prices have climbed 150 soms, and compared to the same period last year, the increase is 513 soms.

Bread remains the cheapest item in the basket, while fresh produce, particularly fruits and vegetables, significantly influences the overall cost. The government's 2009 nutrition standards suggest monthly consumption of various food items for citizens, forming a baseline for such analyses, though individual consumption patterns vary widely.
