Bishkek Lawmakers Criticize City Hall's 'Attempts' at Beautification

Lawmakers in Bishkek are voicing strong criticism against the city administration's methods for enhancing the capital's aesthetic appeal, particularly in anticipation of upcoming large-scale events like the World Nomad Games and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. The core of the critique centers on the perceived misplaced priorities in the beautification efforts.

According to lawmaker Dastan Bekeshev, while improving the city's appearance is commendable, the approach lacks civility and overlooks fundamental infrastructure needs. He pointed out that efforts should first address the uneven sidewalks and the critical issue of green spaces, lamenting the current trend of tree removal which contributes to a dusty and hot urban environment. Instead, the municipality has focused on superficial improvements, such as altering balconies on certain streets.

Bekeshev highlighted that these actions infringe upon the rights of private property owners and cause harm to citizens. He advocated for a more professional and integrated approach, suggesting the hiring of a landscape designer to create a cohesive urban image. The lawmaker urged the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic to take control of the situation, as parliament members will be on recess and unable to provide oversight.

A formal directive is needed to ensure a more thoughtful and citizen-centric urban development strategy, rather than cosmetic changes that disregard the well-being and rights of residents. The criticism underscores a desire for sustainable urban planning that prioritizes both functionality and aesthetics in a balanced manner.
