Bishkek removes illegal balconies, renovates facades for upcoming summits

Bishkek is undertaking a significant urban renewal effort, focusing on the removal of illegally constructed balconies and the renovation of building facades along central avenues like Chuy Prospekt. These efforts are widely believed to be in preparation for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and the World Nomad Games.

While the city administration asserts that only structures built in violation of regulations and without proper permits will be demolished, some residents have expressed dissatisfaction. Their primary grievance is the alleged lack of prior notification regarding the impending removal of their balconies. The municipality stated that owners were issued directives, but work at some addresses is stalled due to the absence of apartment owners, making demolition impossible without their participation.

In parallel with the balcony demolitions, facade renovation is underway on buildings lining Chuy Prospekt and other key streets. This includes painting and general repairs to enhance the external appearance of both residential buildings and urban infrastructure. Additionally, overpasses along Chingiz Aitmatov Avenue and Baitik Baatyr Street are being updated, signaling a broader beautification project aimed at presenting a polished image of the capital for international events.
