Blue Stream Attacked, Will Putin and Erdogan Grow Closer?

An attack on the Blue Stream gas pipeline, a critical conduit for Russian gas to Turkey, has intensified diplomatic maneuvering between Moscow and Ankara. While the drone strike did not halt gas flow, it has underscored the sensitive geopolitical dynamics involving Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia anticipates Turkey and other nations will leverage their influence to caution Kyiv against targeting global energy infrastructure. This statement followed Gazprom's report of a drone attack on the Krasnodarskaya compressor station, part of the Blue Stream supply chain. Gazprom confirmed that swift action prevented supply disruptions, though repairs are ongoing.

The incident carries significant political weight, signaling to Ankara that attacks on Blue Stream are not solely a bilateral issue between Russia and Ukraine but also directly concern Turkish interests. This places Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a pivotal position. Turkey, a NATO member, maintains energy purchases from Russia while supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity and keeping communication lines open with President Vladimir Putin.

Erdogan is one of the few NATO leaders with whom Moscow can engage in direct negotiations. The Blue Stream attack reinforces this unique role, as Turkey navigates its complex relationships, balancing its alliance commitments with its strategic partnerships in energy, trade, the Black Sea, and nuclear projects with Russia, while also supplying defense capabilities to Kyiv.
