BMKG Records 37 Aftershocks Following M7.7 Quake in NTT

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported 37 aftershocks after a powerful M7.7 earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara on Saturday. The tremors continued to be monitored, with magnitudes varying between 3.6 and 6.2. One of these aftershocks was felt by the local population.

BMKG officials stated they would continue monitoring seismic activity and sea levels until the aftershocks subsided. The agency previously issued and then ended a tsunami early warning. During the warning period, tsunami alerts were set for several regions, with "Alert" and "Watch" statuses assigned.

Sea level monitoring detected tsunamis in various locations. The highest recorded wave reached 0.94 meters in Maurole, Ende, at 05:27 WIB. Other areas like Sikka, Flores Timur, and Labuan Bajo also registered tsunami waves, though at lower heights.

BMKG urged residents in affected areas to stay clear of damaged buildings, emphasizing the ongoing risk posed by aftershocks and the potential danger to life and safety. The agency stressed that continued monitoring and public information dissemination were priorities.
