Magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Indonesia kills one, injures two; tsunami warning lifted

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake jolted Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province, resulting in one fatality and two injuries in Maumere, Sikka Regency. The deceased was found trapped under the rubble of a building at the Lorens Say Port waiting area in Maumere.

The head of the Maumere Search and Rescue Office, Faturahman, confirmed the successful evacuation of the victim. "We have already evacuated one person who died, due to being buried by building debris," he stated. The identity of the victim remains unknown. The port's waiting area sustained damage from the earthquake. Two other individuals sustained injuries and have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) initially issued a tsunami early warning after the earthquake, which was later canceled as no alarming sea level fluctuations were observed. The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 30 kilometers offshore from Mbay-Nagekeo, at a depth of 15 kilometers. Several areas in East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, and Southeast Sulawesi were placed on alert status for potential tsunami impacts.
