BMKG revises NTT earthquake to magnitude 7.0, felt in Makassar and Bali

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revised the magnitude of a significant earthquake in Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara, to 7.0, down from an initial reading of 7.7. The tremor was widely felt across the archipelago, reaching as far as Makassar in South Sulawesi and Denpasar in Bali.

The earthquake's epicenter was pinpointed at sea, approximately 38 kilometers northeast of Mbay, the capital of Nagekeo Regency. It occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. BMKG reported the quake's details on its X account, noting the time of occurrence as Saturday, August 15th.

Residents in various locations experienced the shaking with different intensities. In Ruteng, the quake was felt at MMI scale IV-V, while Bima and Dompu regencies registered MMI V. Other areas like Ende, Labuan Bajo, Maumere, and East Sumba felt it at MMI IV-V. Kupang and West Sumbawa Regency experienced it at MMI IV. In contrast, Flores Timur, Lembata, Adonara, West Lombok Regency, Mataram City, and East Lombok Regency felt it at MMI III-IV. Denpasar, Badung, Bulukumba, Jeneponto, Takalar, Gowa, and Makassar experienced the least intense shaking, at MMI II-III.

According to BMKG's Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, a level IV-V indicates that many people indoors will feel the tremor, pottery may break, and doors and windows may creak. At MMI V, almost all residents will feel the shaking, with many waking up and objects falling. Lower levels, like MMI III, mean the vibration is clearly felt indoors, like a passing truck, while MMI II is felt by only a few people, causing light objects to sway.
