Boat Carrying 128 Migrants Reaches English Shores

A record 128 migrants arrived on a single boat in England, according to the Interior Ministry. This group was part of a larger influx on Friday, with 225 migrants arriving in total across three vessels. The number on the single boat surpassed the previous record of 125 migrants.

An Interior Ministry spokesperson acknowledged that smuggling networks are taking greater risks, increasingly packing unseaworthy boats with people. This surge occurs despite a reported 41% decrease in migrant arrivals via the English Channel during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year. Approximately 12,439 people have arrived since January 1.

In response, the British government has pursued several strategies to deter illegal crossings. A three-year agreement with French authorities provides funding for patrols along the northern French coast, the departure point for many small boats. Additionally, the government introduced a significant immigration bill aimed at reforming the asylum system, designed to discourage migrants and expedite deportations.
