Bodies of Nirmal Purja and other climbers to be brought to Camp 1 today after Broad Peak avalanche

A recovery operation is underway to retrieve the bodies of renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja and nine other climbers who perished in an avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak. The ground rescue team is preparing to descend to Camp 1 today to bring the victims' remains to that location.

Following the initial recovery at Camp 1, the bodies are expected to be moved to the Japanese Camp on Monday. If weather and mountain conditions are favorable, helicopters will then be used to transport both the recovery team and the deceased climbers to a safer area. The recovery team emphasized that all efforts are being made to ensure the safe retrieval and dignified repatriation of the climbers to their home countries.

Nirmal Purja, who had previously scaled all 14 of the world's highest mountains in a record-breaking feat, was leading the expedition when the avalanche struck Broad Peak, an 8,047-meter mountain in Pakistan's Karakoram range, around midday on Thursday, July 30. Ten climbers in total were caught in the disaster.

Of the ten victims, six were Nepali mountaineers. Purja's death was officially confirmed on Saturday. The recovery operation faces challenging conditions as it works to bring closure to the families of those lost in the high-altitude tragedy.
