Bogor to monitor air quality daily after volcanic ash exposure

Bogor's municipal government will publish daily air-quality updates after volcanic ash reached the West Java city. Deputy Mayor Jenal Mutaqin said the latest reading stood at 83, a moderate, or blue, level.

The city plans to borrow an air-quality monitoring station from the Environment Ministry on Monday, Sept. 7. Bogor's Environmental Agency will operate the equipment and take new measurements. Jenal said officials hoped the reading would improve the following day.

Although the air remained in the moderate category, the government urged residents to limit outdoor activity. People who want to exercise were advised to choose indoor activities. The restriction applies to students and the wider public as a precaution against exposure to volcanic ash.

God willing, every day the municipal government will update the air-quality status, so people will not be left wondering what the actual air conditions are in Bogor.

Bogor has prepared about 250,000 masks for priority groups. Cleaning crews have also sprayed major roads, public facilities, sidewalks and plants to remove ash deposits, with the operation intensified from Sunday night.

The Health Agency will monitor possible health effects through free health-check programs in several areas. The city also ordered distance learning for students on Sept. 7 and 8, 2026, as part of its response to the ash exposure.
