Bolivia announces employment plan with $92.7 million in international funding

The Bolivian government has launched a new employment generation plan aimed at creating around 73,000 jobs, both direct and indirect, through infrastructure projects. The initiative, dubbed the National Emergency Program for Job Creation - Phase II, will be financed by $92.7 million from the development bank Fonplata.

President Rodrigo Paz presented the plan alongside ministers and Fonplata's country coordinator. The funds will be invested in projects proposed by municipalities and indigenous autonomous governments. A key focus will be on paving streets and constructing access roads to essential infrastructure like health centers and schools. Fonplata, a development bank for Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, supports integration programs within member countries.

Officials estimate the program will generate approximately 18,000 direct jobs and 55,000 indirect jobs, while also improving about 1.2 million square meters of urban and rural roads. Minister Fernando Aramayo highlighted that the plan will benefit construction workers, tile producers, transporters, merchants, and small businesses, aiding economic recovery.

Aramayo also noted the significant economic impact of recent conflicts in May and June, which paralyzed the country for over 50 days, resulting in the loss of an estimated 250,000 jobs and an economic impact of nearly $2.1 billion. The new employment plan will prioritize women and young people. Municipalities can submit project proposals, with a funding limit of up to $260,800 per project, until September 14.
