Bolivia expresses 'deep concern' over Ortega's remarks on Nicaragua elections

The Bolivian government has officially registered its "deep concern" following Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega's recent declaration that elections "will not happen again" in his country. The Bolivian Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing worry over Ortega's remarks regarding future electoral processes in Nicaragua.

According to the Bolivian Chancellery, the full exercise of political rights and respect for the sovereign will of the people are essential for strengthening democratic institutions, protecting human rights, and preserving peace and stability in the region. Consequently, Bolivia has exhorted the Nicaraguan government to strictly adhere to democratic principles and its international commitments within the framework of the Inter-American System.

Ortega made his controversial statement on July 19 during the commemoration of the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista revolution. He asserted that elections would not be held again to prevent the opposition from "trapping the government, trapping power." The following day, Nicaraguan National Assembly President Gustavo Porras stated that elections would indeed take place, but under a new constitutional framework designed to shield them from foreign interference and "traitors to the homeland."
