Bolivia trains prosecutors to tackle drug-related crime in Tarija border areas

Prosecutors in Bolivia’s Tarija department received specialized training on drug-related crime in border areas as the Public Prosecutor’s Office reviewed their work.

The training came through the specialized narcotics crime prosecutor’s office. Departmental prosecutor José Ernesto Mogro said it aimed to strengthen the handling of drug-trafficking cases and other forms of crime connected to border zones.

A commission from the Office of the Attorney General also inspected prosecutor’s offices across Tarija. It reviewed case files, procedural deadlines and other aspects of prosecutorial activity to assess efficiency, compliance and the management of pending cases.

Mogro said the inspections could reveal weaknesses, identify opportunities for improvement and show where prosecutors and support staff needed further training. He linked the effort to Attorney General Róger Mariaca’s push for a more specialized and prepared Public Prosecutor’s Office capable of investigating complex crimes.

The inspections form part of the national office’s monitoring and control mechanisms, which also examine the organization of offices and their handling of caseloads.
