Bolivian Police: 4 Suspects in Agent's Death Killed in Brazil

Bolivian police have confirmed that four Bolivian nationals connected to the killing of a police agent were shot and killed by security forces in Brazil. The men had fled Bolivia in a small aircraft following an ambush on intelligence agents more than a week prior.

According to the Santa Cruz Police commander, David Gómez, the Bolivians were killed in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso after an exchange of gunfire with Brazilian police. Among the deceased was José Mariano Paz Chávez, known as 'Piña,' identified as one of the perpetrators of the July 31 incident in Ascensión de la Frontera.

On that date, armed individuals ambushed intelligence agents who were en route to San Matías to investigate a separate massacre. The assailants reportedly took the body of the fallen agent and abandoned it before escaping in a plane, which was later intercepted by Brazilian authorities. The four men then hid in a wooded area before being surrounded and killed.

This event is linked to a violent dispute between Brazilian criminal organizations, the First Capital Command (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV), over drug trafficking routes along the Bolivia-Brazil border. The Bolivian government has stated that these organizations are responsible for a wave of violence in the region. In response, Brazil's Federal Police will soon establish a permanent office in Bolivia to enhance cooperation against criminal organizations.
