Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz Honored in Lima

Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz received a warm welcome in Lima, Peru, being declared an illustrious guest and presented with the key to the city by acting mayor Renzo Reggiardo. The ceremony took place as Paz arrived to attend the inauguration of Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori.

During the event at the municipal palace, Paz expressed his pride in receiving the keys to the capital, stating that he and his wife, María Elena Urquidi, felt "at home." He remarked, "Peoples who practice hospitality build trust between people and nations." Paz underscored the historical connection between Peru and Bolivia, referencing their shared past within the 19th-century Peru-Bolivian Confederation, and asserted that both nations are destined to "build a closer relationship."

Earlier, at the Torre Tagle Palace, the seat of Peru's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fujimori and Paz discussed the "great potential for cooperation" between their countries. They celebrated the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year and acknowledged their "traditional bonds of neighborhood and brotherhood." Both leaders recognized a broad agenda of shared interests, their status as neighboring countries, and the significant opportunities for collaboration.

Bolivian Foreign Minister Fernando Aramayo had previously indicated Bolivia's priorities, including the swift establishment of a binational cabinet and the identification of joint work areas. A key focus is the utilization of the Peruvian port of Ilo, which holds commercial, tourist, and energy significance for Bolivia as an alternative to its usual trade routes through Chilean ports. This port access is rooted in a 1992 agreement between the elder Paz Zamora and the elder Fujimori, designating Ilo as a free trade zone for Bolivia.
