Bombing outside Italian journalist's home: staged attack or genuine threat?

An investigation into a bombing outside the home of prominent Italian investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci has taken a bewildering turn, shifting from a suspected Mafia hit to a claimed staged event by an acquaintance.

The explosion occurred last autumn near Rome, shattering cars belonging to Ranucci and his daughter. Ranucci, who hosts the critical RAI program "Report," was not home at the time, but his daughter had recently left the vehicle. The incident evoked memories of past violence against journalists and judges in Italy, particularly those who challenged organized crime.

Initially, authorities focused on the Mafia, as Ranucci and his "Report" team have a history of exposing their illegal activities, and Ranucci had personal security. Four individuals were arrested in connection with the bombing, allegedly on behalf of organized crime. The investigation later pointed to Valter Lavitola, a former publisher and restaurateur with ties to political elites, as the alleged mastermind.

However, Lavitola, who described himself and Ranucci as "friends" and claimed to be an informant for the journalist, confessed to ordering the attack. He asserted that the bombing was merely a "staging" designed to alert authorities to Ranucci's genuine danger. Lavitola claims he orchestrated the event to protect his friend, suggesting Ranucci's work put him at significant risk.
